Skills for Managing Intense Emotions and Lasting Recovery

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was originally developed for borderline personality disorder and has since been validated for trauma, addiction, depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. DBT works by teaching practical, learnable skills across four modules: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Mindfulness

Stay present, observe thoughts and feelings without judgment, respond intentionally instead of reactively. The foundation of every DBT skill.

Distress Tolerance

Get through a crisis without making it worse. Tolerate cravings, urges, and emotional pain without escaping into substance use.

Emotion Regulation

Understand, label, and change intense emotions that drive impulsive choices and self-defeating behavior.

Interpersonal Effectiveness

Build and maintain healthy relationships, set appropriate limits, ask for what you need while preserving self-respect.

DBT for Addiction

DBT addresses the emotional dysregulation that underlies most substance use. Many people use substances to manage overwhelming emotions or tolerate distress. DBT directly targets these patterns by teaching alternative skills that work in the same moments that previously led to use.

DBT at Archangel Centers

DBT skills groups are integrated into our PHP, IOP, and outpatient programs. Clients also work one-on-one with a DBT-trained therapist to apply skills to their specific situation. DBT is often paired with CBT, trauma-focused care, and medication management as part of an integrated treatment plan.
